03 / 05 / 2023

The usage of digital communication technology makes our lives both easier and more manageable. However, communicating through digital channels also makes it easier for others to access into your personal information. Today, we have basic tips that can help you keep your personal data safe to share.

Manage security via online method

1. Create strong passwords

When creating a password, think beyond words or numbers that could have been figured out easily, like your birthday. Choose combinations of lower and upper-case letters, numbers, and specific symbols and change them periodically.

2. Don't overshare on social media

Over posting on social media is not only be annoying, but it can also put your personal information at risk. Check your privacy settings so you are aware of who’s seeing your posts and be cautious when posting your location, birthday or other personal details.

3. Use free Wi-Fi with caution

Most free public Wi-Fi networks have very few security measures in place, which means others using the same network could easily access your activity. You should wait until you are at home or on a secure, password-protected network before making any online transaction.

4. Watch out for links and attachments

Cybercriminals are sneaky, and will often compose their phishing scams to look like legitimate communications from a bank, utility company, or other corporate entity. Certain things like spelling errors or a different email address than the typical sender can be a clue that the email is spam. And you should not click link or response to their messages.

5. Check to see if the site is secure

Before entering personal information into a website, take a look at the top of your browser. If there is a lock symbol and the URL begins with “https,” that means the site is secure. There are a few other ways to determine if the site is trustworthy, such as a website privacy policy, contact information or a “verified secure” seal.

Manage security via offline method

1. Keep important document as a copy

For important document, you must scan and save to your computer to make sure that you have both soft copy and hard copy.

2. Close device when you do not use it

Every time you finish using devices such as camera, mobile phone, computer and camera attached to your computer, you have to close them. This includes the connection of Bluetooth. If you leave these devices open, it will be another channel that your personal information can be stolen easily.

3.  Use digital door lock as Smart Home.

Using traditional door lock sometimes causes housebreaking. If you still use traditional door lock, you should try using smart lock that has safer system such as fingerprint access control system and keypad door lock that uses number to unlock the door.

4. Don’t give any information to banks or other companies that call you. Offer to call them back, but search their telephone number on Google by yourself first in order to see whether they seem to be criminal or not.

5. Shred any document that contains personally identifiable information such as old pay slips, bank statement, utility bills.

This is a simple method, but get the efficiency for personal data security both online and offline. Let’s try to apply it!
